quotation marks

I have been using Office XP for 6 months on the current
workstation.  When I recently tried to use quotation
marks in my document, it would show up as ,, instead of ".

Hi dyakaw,

Check under "Tools > Language > Set language".
Probably, you're using German.

Usually, Word gets the language of a new document from the Windows keyboard
language (Language and regional settings).
Or you may have gotten the "German" from some pasted text.
Or Word tries to figure out the language, and failed ("Detect language
automatically" in the "Set language" dialog).
Or ...
