A Weird New Problem

I've been using Winword 2.0 for ages without a hitch, but suddenly
Winword refuses to add anything during spell-checking; the function
is even greyed out. Does anyone know what's happened and/or have a
cure?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Ron,

You certainly must have been using Word 2.0 for ages -- Word 6.0 was
released more than 10 years ago!

I don't know whether the operating limits for 2.0 were ever published
anywhere, and I certainly can't find them now. But Word 97 and Word
2000 both have a limit of 5000 words in the custom dictionary,
according to http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/reference.html and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211489.

Maybe it's time to go clean out the rubbish bin...

Those limits don't apply to the Word 2000 (or XP or 2003) English.

Hi, Doug,

Does that mean the limit in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211489
(as spelled out specifically in Note 2 near the bottom) is wrong?

I see that http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=291176 explains for Word
XP that the limit is 64 KB, and that's approximately 5000 words
depending on the lengths of the words. Is the situation the same in
Word 2000?

(While we're discussing this, could we please get  KB articles
describing operating limitations for XP and 2003 similar to 211489,
pretty please?)

Somewhere in a previous thread I explained this in more detail.  For the
English speller, there is no particular limit to the size of a custom
dictionary except for available memory.  Unfortunately, the there is a huge
range of quality and parameters for the other language spellers.

Thanks, Doug, I had missed that thread a month ago (eons in Net time!) but
just read it on Google Groups. Should I ask for corrections in the KB
articles I mentioned?

Oh please do.  I'd have to do some digging to figure out how to do that.

Thanks, Jay, I'll look and see. But I didn't upgrade to Word 6.0
mostly because I'm comfortable with what I have now. Only
occasionally I'll use the processor in MS Works but I guess I'll
always stick with Winword 2.

I had to create a new custom dictionary and that solved everything.
Thanks, folks.
