I have a Dell laptop bought in the USA - I am in the UK.

I have a problem that the spell check in Word XP seems to default to
English US not English UK.

I have set the default language as English UK and turned off 'Detect
language automatically'.

I have made the normal.dot default language English UK so new ducumnts
I write don't have this problem.

However, with most old documents I open or documents that people send
me Word seems to want to check it in English US, even if I reset the
language to UK.

All I want is for Word to spell check every document in English UK
irrespective of the origin.

Is this possible????

Any help appreciated.

I don't think so. I have a similar problem with files
created in English by clients whose machines are set
(variously) to French, Turkish, German, and so on. Word
remembers the original language of the file. The only way
I've found to make it forget is to go to the beginning of
the file, type control-A to define the entire file's text
and then:

Tools > Language > Set language > {Pick the language you
want } > OK

Save the file immediately and then close and reopen it.

This *usually* works.
