I am running a Dell with XP and Office XP. When I try to open a doc tha
has a picture in it, the box is empty. I am able to copy the empty box
and paste the picture into Photo Editor, and I am able to see th
picture. If I try to bring the picture back into Word it displays a
code. If I open a new doc, and try to open, or import a picture (.JP
or .BMP) all it shows is the code. Is there a setting that I am missin
in Word

Hi ca_daduck,

Go to Tools > Options > View and uncheck Field codes.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the 2 inputs, unfortunately neither worked. The Alt F9
combo as well as unchecking the field code, still the same result.
Bitmaps show as an empty box and jpg's show as code.

On the View tab of Tools | Options:

1. Check the box for "Drawings."

2. Clear the check box for "Picture placeholders."

But if you're seeing [what appear to be] field codes, then either field
codes need to be toggled or (if this doesn't work, as you say it doesn't)
then someone has copied a field code into the document as ordinary text.

Thank you Suzanne, that fixed the problem for me

Do you have "picture placeholders" selected under "Show"
in Tools/Options/View tab?  That can cause similar
problems to the ones you're experiencing...
