I'm using Word 2002 to create a technical training manual. I'm replacing my original figures, so I've created a new document and put just the new figures in it, with captions. I created the captions from the insert menu (Insert-->Reference-->Caption). The captions in both documents are the same. Then I am copying and pasting the figures into the original document. I'm having trouble with one figure (Figure 1.9). When I paste it into the original doc., it suddenly has two captions, Figure 1.9 and Figure 1.7, associated with the figure. When I look back at the real Figure 1.7, it's caption has been replaced with the caption for Figure 1.9. When I undo the paste, I lose the caption for Figure 1.7 altogether, and I have to close the document without saving and reopen it to restore the correct caption for Figure 1.7. This is the same process I've been using for several figures, so I'm not sure what is different about this one.
I had similar highly annoying problems with captions. The
easiest workaround is to delete the troublesome captions
and then insert new ones.
Good luck.

Thanks for the response Tom. I have tried deleting the captions and replacing them, but that doesn't work--once they've been screwed up by the 'new' caption, they are all linked together, and do not change. The only 'workaround' is to delete the figures entirely, and redo them (not really acceptable, because it's far too time consuming). I still need to know what is causing the problem in the first place!
