I have used Word for years and have always drawn straight
lines by clicking the line button and placing it where
needed.

Now when I click the line button on the tool bar a large
box (4'X6') appears with "Place Drawing Here".  After the
line is drawn the space is the same as the box.  I have
tried to shrink the box back down but it will not.  I
also cannot find the setting to get rid of the box.  Can
anyone help?

Tools > Options > General tab:
uncheck "Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes".

Here goes!!!

Under Tools | Options | General
uncheck the option called Automatically create drawing
canvas.  This should stop your box from appearing.
