I just discovered I can make some very clear drawings of barn and house
plans.  I used the rulers as guides for a scale of .25"=1' and came close.
Is there a way to establish a scale and see how long my lines are(to scale)
as I am drawing them?  It worked the way I did it, it just would be perfect
to have the scale option and then...you know.

You can set a grid interval and display the grid onscreen. See Draw | Grid.

Depending on the line/shape, it may also be useful to use Format>AutoShape
and specify size measurements.

If you want to do it well (and with minimum effort!), use a drawing program
like CorelDraw. The current version is quite expensive, but you can find
earlier versions --- more than sufficient for the purpose you describe --
for next to nothing on eBay or at garage sales.
