I am trying to make a Word template that includes places
for pictures. I would like to be able to click on a box to
insert diferent pictures.
I can do this easily in WordPerfect from the Insert menu.
I assume that I can do it in Word. But I haven't been able
to find out how. I am obviously not using the correct
terminology for Help to point me in the right direction.
I (and my class) would appreciate the help.

Word doesn't have any built-in functionality for this.
Closest you could get would be to use a MACROBUTTON field
that display the "box" and links to a macro that would do
what you want. (Display the Insert Picture dialog box,
and...?)

I'd suggest inserting an empty table cell of the appropriate size.
