Links broken when changing wrap style

I am attempting to link to an Excel sheet in my Word 2002 document by using
Paste Special > Paste Link > Picture.  (I am not using Microsoft Excel
Worksheet Object because I need to be able to rotate it.)  If I leave it as
In Line With Text, when I right click on the picture, Update Link is still
available.  However, if I change it to Top and Bottom so that I am able to
rotate the picture, the Update Link option in the right click menu is no
longer available.

Is this a known issue?  Is there a workaround?   Or do I need to just forget
about being able to both link and rotate?

EDIT:  I'm pasting as a Bitmap, not picture.  For some reason, pasting as a
Picture still won't let you rotate.

It could be that Word just can't see the link. I know that with linked
pictures (Insert | Picture | From File | Link to File), the field code for
the linked picture can be displayed only if the picture is inline. If it's
wrapped, Alt+F9 has no effect, but if the picture is temporarily changed to
inline, the field code can be viewed. You may need to take the same approach
with your linked object.

Do you mean changing it to In Line every time I'd like to update it?

I'm afraid so (if that works).

Unfortunately, even that less-than-savory option doesn't seem to work.  It
appears that Word forgets the link once it's been broken by changing to a
different wrap mode.  *sigh*

Thanks for your help though.

That really is a PITA. I guess the only alternative is to insert section
breaks, change the orientation to landscape, and insert as a linked object.

I had tried that, but the document I'm working on has footers that all need
to be at the bottom when the page is viewed in portrait layout (even if the
actual contents are landscape)....Putting the page in landscape mode would
reorient the footer as well.  Oh well!

This can also be dealt with. See
