Clip art disappears or I can't select it after insertion

I am trying to insert a downloaded clip art (from Microsoft) in a name badge
in Word 2003. After I insert it, I can't select it again to move or resize,
and sometimes it disappears altogether. I have a new computer so I don't
think I need a new video card. I have deselected the picture place holder
under Tools/Options. I have formatted the clip art to not be in an absolute
position, to be in line with text, etc. Why does it sometimes disappear and
why can't I click on it to move or resize?
