I love the new picture toolbar including many picture effects, and preset
picture styles to really enhances images. When I make a new document I can
import picture and enhance them using the "correct" picture toolbar.

However, I prefer to save documents using the Word 97-203 compatibility so I
can transfer them to work and open on other machines. But after saving and
closing my document, when I re-open in woord 2007 on the same computer I get
a different toolbar - shadow tools replace the picture styles tab and I
cannot access effects and presets. However, the document save format
obviously supports the effects as the pictures I enhanced when creating the
document still appear the same.

Therefore, how can I get the "good" picture tools -> format tab in the
ribbon for all occassions?

Thanks

Hi Rob,

Some of this is beta behavior, some by design.

When you save in .doc (legacy) format the SmartArt and other new style graphics (Office Art) is converted to static pictures) for
compatability with the older versions.

When you open/reopen a .doc legacy file in Word 2007 you're in 'compatible [with Word 2003] mode'.

If you open the .doc file and then use

 Office button[File]=>Convert

which switches that particular document into Word 2007 editing mode,  do you get the tools back for that particular graphic?

For Beta 2 the SmartArt (formerly IGX) graphics aren't available and the workaround MS suggests is to first save as either a  .DOCX
(plain) or .DOCM(automatable) file format and then do a Save As to the .doc file to share with folks on other versions of Word.

Ok Thanks,

I might change my default to docx, but as Word Documents are so commonly
transferred I am unsure if it is worth it, at the moment,  with the
additional hassle of converting every time (and no doubt re-sending after
forgetting to)

Thanks
