I created a document in an ealier version of Word into which I added several
.gif images. When I open the document in Word 2007, the images show up as a
black box. Anybody know of any image conversion problems?

You can try a shareware programme called Graphic Convertor. That should work.
Comment: Why is this happenng? I suppose we are on towards improved
development. Why we need this converter in the latest tech development?
