French and Spanish special letters WORD 2000

I know this is very basic, but I don't know how to add the
special letters for French or Spanish. I am using WORD
2000 on Win 98. I have searched but cannot seem to get
anywhere. All help would be appreciated.

1. Word has a number of keyboard shortcuts for entering accented characters.
Look them up in Help.

2. Use Word's Insert>Symbol feature, or Windows' Character Map utility

3. Type the numeric code of the character you desire on the number pad thus
e.g. ALT+0140= O

4. Set up an International keyboard layout (which works in all
applications):
