Please help this is driving me crazy. I am using Word 97
standard (Czech version) in a multilingual environment. I
run Windows XP Professional (Czech version) and I have
added both English and Czech. I used to be able when I
was writing a document in Word to just click Left Alt +
Shift and switch between languages. For some reason this
is not working but only when I am within an Word 97
application. If for example I am in Windows Explorer or
Excel 97 and I want to create a new Folder it lets me
switch between English and Czech by using the Left Alt +
Shift shortcut keys. I tried different keyboard shortcut
without any effect. And I tried this on another PC with
same software also without any effect, same problem.

So when I am writing a document in Word 97 and I am
writing it in English and I want add for example a Czech
word and I try to use Left Alt + Shift to switch between
languages it does not work at all it does nothing. I have
to use the mouse and click on the language bar and select
the language from there and then again select the language
I was using before but imagine to do that for every word I
write?

Has anyone come across this before and if so I would
deeply appreciate your help.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Radek,

Might you have assigned Shift+Alt+something to some command
in Word? Or could you have installed an Addin that is using
this combination?

If you start Word with the /a switch, so that it runs with
the installation defaults, do you get the behavior you
prefer?

Hi, Cindy

I have not assigned left Shift+Alt to some command in Word.

I have not installed any Addin that is using this
combination.

Same situation on MS Windows 2000 czech is working fine.

Hi Radek,

And when you start Word in "safe mode"? (my third question in
the previous message)

Now my problem is solved by disable Alternative User Input
Processor activated by CTFMON.EXE .

When ctfmon.exe is running I cannot change keyboard layout
by pressing Left Alt + Shift in MS Word 97 CZ. When I kill
ctfmon.exe process this problem is solved, but i lose
keyboard state control by look at keyboard icon.

Hi Radek,

> I tested this mode of course, but without success.

Then I'm afraid I don't know why Alt+Shift isn't being
recognized... I do have a couple of suggestions, however

1. Change the keyboard combination that triggers language
change to a different keyboard combination

2. Create a set of styles for each language you use, and
assign these to keyboard shortcuts within Word.

Note: if you decide to try (2) you will need to make sure
the default languages in Windows and Word are synchronized.
There's an article on that in the Tips section of my
website.
