I'm working with translations from English to Norwegian and vice versa, on a
small scale, freelance basis, and wonder if there are some
tools/plugins/additions for Word 2000 that can help me in this work? I have
checked some of the professional translation software packages, but they're
insanely expensive (from $500 - $800 and upwards), so I would be very
grateful for all information about available tools for Word (free or
commercial) Since I have the English version of Office 2000, I have no
proofing tool for the Norwegian texts, and wonder if such a tool can be
purchased/downloaded from Microsoft (or some other source) for Word 2000?

Hi Trond,
As to Proofing tools for Word 2000: Up until a year ago, you could purchase
these retail, outside the U.S., from any company dealing in Microsoft Office
products. Production was discontinued when Word 2003 was released last year,
however. So your only chance to get the Microsoft tools would be through
something like E-bay.
Since Office 2000, ALL 30+ languages have been available on a single CD; you
just install those you want to work with.
Please note, also, that if you had a Norwegian version of Word that you'd
automatically have both the Norwegian and English set of proofing tools.

You may want to take a look at a CAT program called MetaTexis which is
much less expensive than highend systems like Trados or Déjà Vu. You
can find them at:
http://www.metatexis.com/
Computer aided translation tools are great if you end up having
repetitive translations. The more you work with a CAT system to build
up terminology databases, the easier the work load.
I hope that helps you out.
