Yes, I do have the font installed.

If you do, then what version of Word is this? Are both people using the same
version?
I have sometimes seen such problems, but only ever when people were using
different versions (like Word 2000 vs Word 2002).

We both have Office XP, Word 2002 with SP3. He can type Japanese in his Word
but I can't. Do I need to have the same install as he does in order to view
his documents in the correct font?

I can set the language to Japanese before I open his document but when I go
back to the tool after I open the document it is on English. If I open the
document then set the language to Japanese it holds the setting but does not
view the font properly.

I meant the ability to edit Japanese at all?
I cannot repro the specific problem you are reporting, so I am trying to
figure out what factor in the config you have is causing a problem to be
revealed....

No, I can't edit Japanese, possibly if I used the appropriate keystroke
combonations. I don't have the multi-language user interface download
installed (but I do have the Japanese language pack and global IME
installed). Would that make a differnece?

You said this was WinXP or Win2000? You have an IME then....

I have XP with SP1. I was going to try viewing the Japanese documents at
home where I have XP with SP2 but was a little confused about what downloads
I would need.

If you have XP with any or no service pack, then you have a built-in IME.
Just make sure you have enabled ssupport for East Asian languages in
Regional and Language Options (checkbox in the second tab) and then if you
it the Details... button on that tab you can add the Japanese IME. No
download is required to get this.
