"Freezing" Right-to-Left Text

Hi

I'm trying to convert a Nisus Writer 6.5 Arabic and English document to Word
and then take the Word document to Adobe InDesign for typesetting. The
problem that I'm having is that I can't find a way to "freeze" the
right-to-left Arabic so that it flows into Indesign as left-to-right text
(that is, it will read correctly in Arabic, but if I were to dump it out of
InDesign as a text file, it would be backwards). Does anyone have any
experience doing this? I've tried a lot of ideas using Nisus Writer's export
features, Word's export features, and even passing the document through Adobe
Acrobat (I thought that Word might "freeze" the text order for me if I tried
to "print" it into Acrobat; then I could export the text from Acrobat), but
without success.

Thanks for any help; this has been really frustrating.

Matt,

Neither Word, nor InDesign are "BiDirectional" aware.

You can only do what you want by creating a graphic of your text and
placing that.

To do so you need to switch to the LaserWriter 8 printer driver (in
Classic) and (in the upper right corner) choose File rather than
Printer. This allows you to create a PostScript file that you can
paste.

Hi Mark

Thanks for your reply. I see that I left out a crucial bit of information
from my original post. I'm using Word for Windows, which definitely is
bidirectionally aware. I think, too, my use of the term "freeze" may be too
vague. I'm trying to capture the text from Microsoft Word as it reads on the
page from left to right so that I can use a non-bidirectional program
(InDesign) to typeset the pages, but when I export the text from Word, it
flips the right-to-left text, as one would expect. I had hoped that printing
a PDF file would effectively freeze the order of the characters on the page
so that I could then export the text from Acrobat. That process creates its
own set of problems (the Arabic is lost on export). I was hoping, therefore,
that someone could point me in the direction of a VBA-based solution.

In the end, I think I'm going to have to go with my backup plan--using the
unfortunate MS Publisher to set the book.

Thanks again.

Ask Adobe about their Middle East versions.
