I have attempted to type a letter in Spanish(Mexico) and it seems to auto
detect that it is Spanish but after the auto detect button comes on a
character of two later the Word application closes.  I have attempted this on
a PC using Windows 98 and it does not do the same thing.  I am a little
confused.

I have no idea why it is closing, but I found the AutoDetect feature to
be absolutely annoying.  I'm a translator and I write in both English
and Spanish, all day.  Parts of my documents would be formatted as
English, part as Spanish, and it really screwed up the spellchecking.

I would disable that feature, and then maybe write a macro to switch
languages.  Or create a Spanish and an English document template, and
choose one of them whenever you start a new document.

I agree with Steven that autodetect language is a pain and should be turned
off. What I did was customize a toolbar to include the Language drop-down, so
I don't have to go looking for it deep in the Tools menu.
