Word crashes while changing Indic IMEs

I am using Word 2003 (part of Office 2003) with Windows XP SP2. I am having many Indic LIPs also installed, but I mostly use English UI. I have many Indic IMEs installed. I also have many opentype fonts installed, many of them are not from Microsoft. Now coming to my problem.

If I start Word and start typing in any one particular IME, like Hindi, Kannada, etc., it works fine. But the moment I change the IME, Word hangs. This happens only in Word. Changing IME is working fine in Excel, PowerPoint, FrontPage, etc, which are part of the same Office 2003 suite. I face the same hanging problem when I change the IME in Outlook since it uses Word as its editor. I thought, this problem could be due to the fact that I have many non-Microsoft opentype fonts installed and somehow linked to the font-linking feature of Word. I deleted all non-Microsoft fonts but the problem persisted. I tried the Detect and Repair option under Help menu -no luck. I tried re-installing (without uninstalling) - no luck. Before fully uninstalling and then re-installing, I want the opinion of the experts here. What could be happening and is there a simple solution?

TIA.

Pavanaja

The most likely cause of the problem would be the "Indic IMEs". Have you
tried getting rid of them?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that checking which I did. I also thought Indic
IMEs available for download at BhashaIndia.com might be cousing the problem.
There were problems with some verions of these IMEs which were rectified
later. Neverthless, I have tried uninstalling those IMEs fully. I even
uninstalled all Indic components, then added just Hindi and Kannada IMEs
(which is built-in in XP) and tried. The problem persists. Do you think the
only solution is to uninstall Office fully and then install again?

To be honest I am no longer sure exactly what the problem is, since the
original problem metioned was a crash in Word when changing to the Indic
IME, but now you are saying that even when you uninstall you are crashing
(indicating new symptoms?).

I fully uninstalled Office, rebooted and installed Office 2003 again. The
problem persists.

I forgot to add. I had earlier installed the updated font package which also
contains the updated uniscribe. These are the beta versions which will
eventually go into Vista. I had lot of problems after installing these. I
had reverted back to my old uniscribe with great difficulty. But since I
have fully uninstalled and then reinstalled Office suite, the proper
matching uniscribe should be present now (Office uses its own version of
Uniscribe).

It looks like that I have to re-install Windows. Any other ideas?

I will repeat what I said before -- your original complaint was that Word
was crashing while you were using Indic IMEs. You have now uninstalled the
IMEs, so dies that mean the problem is solved?

Or is there another problem now?

I have uninstalled and then re-installed the IMEs as I need the Indic IMEs.
Whenever I change IME from one Indic to another or from English to Indic,
Word crashes. Here Indic IME means the IME that comes by default with
Windows XP. I also have SP2. I am ble to use the IMEs without any problem in
other applications of the Office suite as well as Notepad, Wordpad, etc.

Um, neither XP nor XP SP2 come with any Indic IMEs -- they come with regular
keyboard layouts.

The IMEs are the ones you talked about that you downloaded from a web site?

If they do not work for you then you have to find out if they are supported
or not....

Ok. There is a difference in what I am assuming and what you are defining. I
have already clarified - "Here Indic IME means the IME that comes by default
with Windows XP"

You call them as keyboard layouts. Ok. I have no objection with your
definition.

Yes, Bhashaindia.com web-site has "Indic IMEs" available for free download.
They do have some bugs and I am aware of the bugs. I am not refering to
these IMEs. I have uninstalled them.

Let me rephrase my problem as per your definition - "I am having the problem
of Word crasing when I change the keyboard layouts from English to any Indic
or from one Indic to another". Other applications have no problem.

Ok, that definitely sounds like a bug; there is no situation where that
ought to happen. And you have been working with people in product support?
Have they run through any of the ideas with you?

The biggest potential for problem that I can see is with the beta versions
of Uniscribe you mentioned -- that may be the weak link here.

Have you installed the latest supported version, which you can get to from
here:

http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/archive/2005/08/09/449405.aspx

to see if that helps?

Do you mean the update that adds Nepali and other languages? I have not
added that update. Earlier, I had problem with the beta of Nepali ELK. I had
to uninstall that. Currently I do not have this update (897338) installed in
my system.

I also strongly suspect the beta versions of Uniscribe that got installed
with the beta version of fontpack which will be part of vista, which I was
testing. But then how do I get back my old Uniscribe and other components? I
have deleted the new fonts and put back the old fonts (I had kept a backup
copy of the Indic fonts). But getting back the old uniscribe is the most
difficult part. Moreover, there are atleast two versions of uniscribe in the
system. One used by Windows at system32 folder and the one used by Office.
Replacing the uniscribe at Office folder is easy. But replacing the one in
system folder is quite difficult.

Do you have any idea what is the version no of uniscribe that will work well
with XP SP2 without the update (897338)?

I honestly do not know the best way to recover from all of those various
beta packages. Perhaps someone else has a thought short of reinstall....

Today I downloaded and installed the Office 2003 SP2 with a hope that it
might solve my problem. But no luck.
