This addresses the "front matter" of a book and the
remainder of the book very well, but I didn't see in it
anywhere on how to have no numbering for section 1, and
then numbering for the remaining 2 sections.  I got my
section 2 starting at IX and my section 3 starting at 1
but section 1 starts at IX too and when I try to delete
the numbering, it removes it from the entire document.

Glory to God I figured it out!  Here is how you have a 3
section document on Word 2000 and have no numbers in
section 1, roman starting at other than 1 in section 2,
and arabic starting at 1 in section 3.  This is a
standard book format with a potion of unnumbered front
matter.  

1. divide doc into 3 sections
2. remove same as previous from first AND second footer
in each section
3. on h/f toolbar, format page numbers
4. on h/f toolbar insert page numbers in 1st footer first
and then second too
5. repete for the 2 sections ya want numbered
6. you'll notice that the page numbers are not centered.  
in h/f view, select first footer page number, go to
insert page numbers on tools menu, and select center and
click ok.
7. do this for the second footer of each section.  Once
ya do this for the second footer, the remaining page
numbers should be centered.

Notes: it seems there's this funny thing about having to
format the first AND second footer in each section to get
it tha way ya want.  Note two: I only did this once and
haven't tested it, relying only on memory, so these
instructions may not be accurate and you'll have to tweak
them.  Note 3:  before you start working on a huge
document, have a backup copy so ya can just reload that
when too many tweaks makes things screwy, so you can have
a fresh start.
