Bullets and number outlining

For some reason I can't outline using bullets or
numbers.  I have been for this semester (law student),
but suddenly when I select the number outline option and
press the "tab" button, it doesn't go to the next level
of the outline, i.e. I. "tab" A. "tab" 1. etc.

Any help on how to fix this would be great.  Thanks.

Hi dvass

In earlier versions of Word, Tools | Options | Edit. Tick "Tabs and
backspace set left indent".

In Word 2002 and 2003, Tools | Autocorrect Options | AutoFormat as you
Type. Tick Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces.  If
you've never visited this dialog box before, avoid the temptation to
tick anything that isn't already ticked.

Hope this helps.

Word 2000 and earlier: Check the box for "Tabs and backspace set left
indent" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.

Word 2002 and above: Check the box for "Set first- and left-indent with tabs
and backspaces" on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect
Options.
