My normal template had to be re-set and somehow I lost the ability to insert
AutoText into a header or footer.  All my documents have the path and
filename insert but can't do that now.  It's permanently greyed out although
I can add other inserts.

Any idea how to get it back.  I really need it in a hurry.

Thanks.

How did you "reset" Normal.dot? It sounds as if you may have saved over it
instead of renaming it and letting Word build a new one. See “WD2002: Styles
and AutoText Are Not Copied to New Template Based on Normal.dot” at

I wanted certain features in Normal.dot and indeed saved over it.  I've
since done a new template for Word and given it another name.

What's still missing tho is in Word, when I click on Header and Footer, the
options that come up are all there however Insert AutoText is greyed out.
It had a dropdown menu which gave me many options, the most important single
option I used was to enter the path and file name.

I can't understand why it's greyed out when I'm in Header or Footer mode.

Thanks for the reference to the Article.

Thanks again.

You'll need to rename Normal.dot (with Word closed) and let Word generate a
fresh copy. Then your AutoText should be back to the default. For
customization, see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/CustomizeNormalTemplate.htm

Thank god!!  Thanks so much.  I was knocking myself out trying to re-create
it.   Of course, once you know, it's simple and I do remember in the past
with the same problem just re-naming normal - the trick being when Word is
closed.

The www.mvps.org/ site is really good and I'll refer back to it frequently!
