Do I need to send the template that my document is based
on along with the document in order for the recipient to
see it as I have designed it?

How can I be sure that their normal.dot isn't set
to "automatically update styles?"

It's a document property, so if you haven't set it, what they have set is
irrelevant.

Word documents do not travel well because of the vagaries of printer driver
and font selection. To ensure the recipient sees the document eaxctly as
intended, you need to save as PDF for which you'll need additional third
party software.

PDF isn't an option because the person needs to use the
document I've created.

In order to see the document *exactly* as you intended, its one or the
other. Either pdf, or they must have the *same* printer driver and the
*same* font outlines.
