Well, just for a start, two spaces after a period are not "conventional"
except in typing (or when using monospaced fonts such as Courier New), and
there is no "newline character" (line break) when Word wraps text to the
next line. Ordinarily, Word stacks up spaces at the end of a line (outside
the margin) no matter how many you enter. If yours are behaving differently,
it's probably because you have the "Wrap trailing spaces to next line"
option checked on the Compatibility tab of Tools | Options. The likely
reason is that Compatibility is set to a version of WordPerfect instead of
Word 97.

Hi Dylan,
First, two spaces after a period (or colon or question mark) is
"conventional" only if you are typing on a typewriter. For
proportionally-spaced fonts, the convention is one space, because extra
spacing is built into the font.
Second, under Tools => Options => Spelling and Grammar if I click for the
grammar settings in Word 2003 I can set one or two spaces there. I don't
know if that setting changes what happens when Word reaches the end of a
line.
Finally, BTW, justified text is harder to read although it may look nicer.
With few exceptions, I use left-aligned. Of course, if you want what you
write to be harder to read, then by all means use full justification.

Thanks to both for replies. I guess I didn't get the memo
about two spaces not being necessary for proportional
fonts :)
Yes Susan, the checkbox "Wrap trailing spaces to next
line" was checked under the template that this document
was created from. Unchecked that and the problem was
solved. Very nice.
I agree Charles that left-justified text is easier to
read. However the guy wants it fully justified; maybe I
will try and change his preference.
Thanks again.

It's not free. Didn't they tell you you have to come back here and help
others with questions *you* know the answer to? <g> That's the beauty of
