My first suggestion is to open the document and check Tools > Templates
and Add-ins. Make sure that the "Automatically update document styles"
box is *not* ticked.

If that doesn't help, post back and describe the symptoms in some more
detail. In what way are the styles whacked? Where are you looking when
you see no styles?
