Change the text box to a frame and Word will see the text in it.

Using a frame instead of a text box, as suggested by
Graham Mayor, adds the possibility of making a paragraph
style that includes frame formatting. In other words,
simply selecting a style would then place the frame, in
the desired position, and you could simply type the text
that should go there. While this may not be appropriate
for all situations, it can certainly come in handy at
times.

Very clever! Thank you!
(It's amazing how I could use the Format pop-down menu in Style -> Modify
for all these years, never notice "Frame" among "Font" etc, and never think
of its uses.)
