I have cheked the formatting of all headings. Word
creates a TOC; hoever, when it gets to page 172 it starts
over awith page one and goes to page 19. When I click on
the link, it goes to the right page; however, the page
numbers will not change to 173 etc..

Hi Joseph

Are you saying that the table of contents is constructed correctly, but
that it is displaying the wrong page numbers? That is, after items from
page 172, the ToC shows the page number starting over at 1?

If that's the case, then bear in mind that the principle here is that
the ToC will display the page numbers as they appear on the page. Or, if
you haven't got page numbers displaying on the page, then the ToC will
display what page numbers would otherwise be.

So, you may have a section break in your document, and the section break
is marked to re-start page numbering. Go to page 172. Does the status
bar at the bottom of the screen say Page 172 Sec 1? Fine. Now, go to
page 173 (or, if necessary, try a few pages after that). Does it say
Page 1 Sec 2? If so, with your cursor in Section 2, do Insert > Page
Numbers. Click Format. Click "Continue from previous section". Click OK
and then CLOSE (don't click OK at the Page Numbers dialog).

Now, update your table of contents field. When given the choice, choose
Update Entire Table.

There's more info on sections at

And there's more information about page numbering at

Hope this helps.
