Hi, folks,

I have a long 1x1 table that continues onto the next page.

I think it would look nice if there were no bottom border on the first
page, and no top border on the second page.  It would make the table
look like it was "continuing".

Is there a way to make Word do this?  What alternatives might you
suggest that also look nice?  (I'd rather not split the table into two
cells, because maintaining that if the document gets repaginated would
be a real pain.)

Thank you,
-Phil

As far as I know, there is no way to accomplish exactly
what you want. One possibility is to remove the top and
bottom borders of the table (from the Format>Borders and
Shading dialog box). Perhaps someone else knows a better
solution?

... and then apply a top border to the first *paragraph* in the table, and a
bottom border to the last paragraph.

A bit clumsy, and you probably have to set the cell margins to zero, so the
vertical and horizontal lines fit neatly.

Which version of Word are you using?  I know that 97 handles i
differently than 2000.

I disagree, though, with your taste.  I think it looks terrible

Wait a minute... if the table is 1x1, then why make it a table at all
Phil - 28 Jan 2004 15:33 GMT
Cause it's for a mathematical example, and I wanted to set it off by
having a border all around it.  So I used a 1x1 table to make a
border.

Assume that putting the table all on one page is not possible in this
situation.

If you give the table a bottom border, then any row that ends at the bottom
of the page will also have a bottom border. So divide your table into rows,
omitting borders between rows. Presumably if there's enough text to break
over a page, then there's more than one paragraph, so you could start a new
row for each paragraph. Word will like this better, anyway.
