I'm doing footnotes in Word for the first time, and I'd
like to have the footnote reference number superscripted.
When I ask "Office Assistant," it only tells me how to
manually superscript something.  Is there a way to tell
Word to superscript the footnote numbers automatically?

Terri,

Unless you have changed something, Word already superscripts footnote
reference numbers.  How are you entering the footnote reference numbers?
Are you using Insert>Reference>Footnote?  That is the menu path with
Word2003 and it is something similiar with earlier versions.

And in case it has gotten changed, you just need to modify the Footnote
Reference style to be superscript.

Hi, Suzanne, can you tell me how to do this?  I've
searched all through help and I can't find where to change
the format of the number itself.

Terri,

Select one of the footnote reference marks.  With the Styles and Formatting
task pane open, click the down arrow adjacent to the Footnote Reference
style name in the Formatting of selected text window.  Next click the
modify>format>font.  Apply superscript font and click OK.

Yes, that's exactly how I'm doing it.  I didn't knowingly
change anything--any idea how to return the footnote
formatting to its default?
