Referencing page numbers in separate documents

Hi,

Does anyone know of a way for the page number of a section of text in
a .doc to be displayed inside another .doc?

We are working with a series of separate documents, and would like
each document to be able to reference the page numbers of particular
sections in other documents.

No problems referencing the page number of a section on another page
in the same document, but it's a different story when we try to do it
between documents.  I realise that Word Help says it can't be done
unless the documents are combined as master-subs, but we want to avoid
this 'feature'.  I'm hoping there's an undocumented work-around that
could give us the functionality we'd like.

I've experimented with bookmarks, hyperlinks, the { page } field, the
{ includeText } field, but no luck so far.  I've looked at straight
links, but haven't been sure how to implement that.  I know it's
possible for images.

I'm aware that there may be no way of doing it, and we'll have to do
it all manually.

But if anyone has made this kind of inter-document cross referencing
happen, please let me know what you did!

Thanks,

Fiona
