Never mind. I found a web article that says this is a known bug. It doesn't
occur if you set the right tab to coincide with the right margin.

Actually, one of the things I adjust without thinking about it when
dealing with TOC styles is exactly that: I leave the right-aligned tab
(for the page number) at the position of the right page margin, and then
I give the style a right (paragraph) indent of, say, 0,5 cm. That
ensures that the text of longer headings will break BEFORE it runs into
the page number (which a. looks ugly and b. might push the number
further out).
I'm so used to "CTRL Q" any TOC right after update that it's become
second nature, kind of :-)
