I have a book on Word 2000. I am attempting to put the
name of the book in the header for even pages and chapter
names in header for odd numbered pages. This requires
making section breaks. Now, I'm getting real deep headers
at the end of a chapter, sometimes but not always. With
all the formatting and border marking on, the top of the
page formatting line, is at 1" as it should be, but the
depth of the header is lower, anywhere from half an inch
to three inches. Thus the usable portion of the page
starts at 3" instead of 1". I've tried to cut text out,
paste it to blank document, then cut out the text from
the book, then paste back from the other. Sometimes this
works. But I've reached a place where the header is fine,
however, when I put in the section break, the header on
the page goes to 3" deep. I have tried everything and
cannot make it work.
Help!!!

You don't need section breaks for this - and they will only create
confusion. Use file > page setup > layout to create different odd/even
headers. Put the name of the book in the even header and a Styleref field to
call the content of the chapter title style in the odd page header. You will
of course need unique style name for the chapter title.

As Graham says, you don't need section breaks for this, but to address the
specific problem, it most likely results from having the vertical alignment
set to Justified instead of Top (Layout tab of Page Setup).

Sorry, that should have been "Center instead of Top."
