Then I am attempting to generate a table of contents across several large
documents.  I have created an RD field by going to Insert | Field and
entering the location and file name.  The field includes a double slash for
each directory.   however, when I attempt to generate the field and by
hitting Control+A and F9, nothing happens.  how do you actually generate the
table of contents after setting up the field?  thanks in advance

Hi, Mark,

I hope I'm not telling you something you already know... The RD field itself
doesn't produce any visible result. In one document, you need to have an RD
field for each of the other documents (in the order in which the documents
should appear) *plus* a TOC field. Updating the TOC field should then
produce a table of contents.

Jay -

Thanks for the suggestion.  This did generate a table of contents for two of
the documents, but for the others it returns the message "Error! Cannot open
file referenced on page i" and I get a box with the following message: "The
document or path is not valid.  Try these suggestions: * check the file
permissions for the document or drive * use the file open dialog box to
locate the document."  I have made sure that the file reference is valid,
have unchecked the "read-only" indicator for the directory in Explorer, and
in Explorer also designated the director as shared.

In addition, one of the documents is an Appendix and I numbered it "A-1,"
etc in the footer.  However, it returns a Roman numeral "1".  How can I fix
this?

Thanks!

Hi, Mark,

It's very hard to diagnose things like this long-distance, but here
are some things to look at:

In the RD fields, did you double *every* backslash in the file paths?
If the files that work and the ones that don't are in the same folder,
compare the RD fields character-by-character for differences.

Are the files the RD fields point to on a server or a different PC
from the one where you're building the TOC? Can you open those files
in the same copy of Word? (By the way, what version of Word are you
using?) Could there be some network hiccup going on? Whether or not
the directory is designated as shared shouldn't have any bearing,
unless you're mapping a drive to the share and using the mapped drive
letter in the RD fields.

Regarding the appendix numbering, how did you accomplish the "A-1"
numbering? Did you use a list-numbering style for the appendix title,
and use the Page Number Format dialog to set the numbering to "include
chapter number"? When I do that, the TOC / RD combination shows the
same page number format as the page itself...

Thanks Jay.  The files are all double-backslashed and are on the same
computer, but a different directory.  I am using Word 2002.  Our network
uses the Worldox file management system, which has caused some other issues
in the past.  I will follow up and see if that could be causing any
problems.
