Word formatting problem on long document (300+ pages)

I start out using "Normal" which is Times New Roman font, regular, size 10,
justified. The bulleted items are Times New Roman font, regular, size 10,
justified, Right margin 0.25", Hanging 0.25" and Paragraph After 6 pt. There
are some specific words that are italicized, and some specific words are
bold italics. When I do any editing on this for any reason, I save after
each change, scroll down through it before doing a final save, and all the
bulleted items are formatted correctly. As of yesterday, I started from
07-05-94 and went down through 12-16-97 and everything was formatted
correctly when I did the final save. However, when I opened the file up this
morning to begin editing at 01-20-98, I noticed that some of the bulleted
items were randomly changed to bold, italics, indented differently, and
centered. I cannot think of any explanation for this happening but I have
worked on this file approximately 5 fives in the last week, and have had to
start over from the beginning with the formatting of the bulleted items.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Are you using the bullets-button on the toolbar? Be ware, it's EVIL!!

If you haven't already done this, define a style for your bulleted
paragraphs, add the bullet properties in the style definition, and apply
the style wherever you need bullets.

I've been using the toolbar buttons & numbers option.  What's evil?

ListTemplate hell, why not :-)

I'd it depends on what you are using the toolbar for, or rather: what
kinds of documents you are creating. For short letters and stuff, you
might never face any problems.

But with large documents, or a lot of copying between documents,
whenever you need consistency within or between document(s), you will
most probably run into troubles sooner or later when your bullets and
(outline) numbering isn't (at least) style based.

Thanks for the links and the answer.  So to use a scholarly outline,
something with more than two or maybe three levels, it's best to stay
away from the toolbar buttons, and to to Styles instead?

Please correct if I've got that wrong.

The question isn't how many levels but rather how much editing. If you are
going to be moving things around, adding and deleting, you want to be using
styles. Once you have them set up, using them is very easy.

Avoid using the numbering button on the toolbar (also the bullet button) in
documents that are going to be edited much. Avoid using them in setting up
any templates.

Well, if you have more than 3 levels, I pray for your readers. ;-)

But yes, it's good practice to use styles for that, anyway.
