I created a template, using word (tables) and form
fields.  I know need to change the properties on the
table, but when i try to change it, i have to save it as
another template.  the problem is that i have a macro that
enables spellcheck, but when i save it make the change and
then go rename it, it erases the macro.

is there a way to edit a template??

To make changes to a template, you need to open it directly. It sounds as if
you are creating a new template or document based on your existing one. If
you are using Word's File Open dialog, navigate to the Templates folder and
open the template as you would a document. If you're using Windows Explorer,
don't double-click on the file; this will create a new document based on it.
Instead, right-click and choose Open.
