General Doc Formatting Won't Stop  Giving Up!

Every time I format a line/paragraph in Word 2002, the
whole doc pics up on that formating and applies it to the
whole doc.  Thus, if I center a heading, the whole doc is
centered.  If I underline something, the whole doc is
underlined.
Yes, I know you can reverse this by Alt+Backspace, but I
should not have to do that every time a format a small
section of a doc.
