I have a large document with at lot of automatic heading,
table, and figure numbering, a lot of cross-references,
plus the table of contents. At some point, the cross
references began sporadic craziness. It normally happens
when I open the document. When I look, I see that,
instead of inserting a simple cross reference, "Table 3",
Word has also inserted all of Table 2 in front of
the "Table 3", just for kicks I guess. The field code
looks OK; it just refers to a bookmark "REF _Ref66081527
\h". If I cut the cross-reference and then reinsert it,
the bookmark changes (REF _Ref68056406 \h) and the file
looks fine as long as I don't close and reopen it.
I know I've heard cautions to avoid too many bookmarks
(for example, advice not to update the TOC too
frequently), because it causes problems. However, I don't
remember any information about what to do to fix the
problem after it occurs. I would appreciate any clues you
might have. Thanks.

It is unfortunately very easy to get excess text inside a bookmark once it
has been inserted. If you had inserted a cross-reference to the Table 3
caption, then pressed Enter at the beginning of that caption to create Table
2, you managed to put all of Table 2 inside the bookmark that was inserted
when you created the cross-reference to Table 3. Since these bookmarks are
hidden, they're very difficult to work around. To be on the safe side,
always press Enter at the end of the previous paragraph instead of the
beginning of a caption paragraph.
