spelling flags "ignored" words

We're using Word 2000 on Windows 2000.

I've checked the spelling in my document and have asked Word to ignore
several dozen words. Then, when I've re-checked or re-opened the same
document, I'll see that those "ignored" words are flagged again as
spelling mistakes.

I occasionally move this file from one folder to another (from a folder
that uses our network to my hard drive). Would this affect spelling? If
not, what might cause Word to reflag "ignored" words?

I couldn't find anything about this in "Tools > Spelling & Grammar"
window, the online help, and the Knowledge Base.

Hi Barbara

The Ignore button in the spelling checker saves your choices only for the
current Word session and document. Those choices are not saved along with
the document. That's just the way it works.

If you have some terms that you always want the checker to ignore, add them
to your custom dictionary. That's what the Add button in the spelling
checker dialog is for.

Thanks for the information, Jay. I guess I was confusing Word's "Ignore"
feature with FrameMaker's "Allow in this Document" feature. Thanks for
helping me out!

What! That is not my understanding at all. I just tested it in Word
2002.

I just created a document with a spelling error, checked it and told
Word to Ignore Once, saved and closed the document, and re-opened the
document. The error was not flagged. I asked for a spelling check and
the error still was not flagged.

My understanding is that an ignored error is "permanently" ignored in
that document. In Word 2002, there is a "Recheck Document" button in
the Tools | Options | Spelling & Grammar tab that will allow you to
start over from scratch. This will undo all of your ignore choices, so
it could get to be a nuisance on a long document. Obviously it is
better not to make mistakes when telling Word to ignore a word.
