revise a template

i created a template and i need to update it. when i try
to save changes, it wants me to rename it as a new
document. how can i make changes to a template and save
it without having to rename it???

Use File Open to open the template, or right-click on its Icon in Windows
and select Open. The default action for using a template is to create a new
document based on the template. (This is what you want. You don't want to
have to remember to _not_ save changes to your letterhead everytime you
write a letter.)

Nydia,

After clicking "save as", you need to change the file type
to "Document Template".

Not at all. In order to edit a template, you have to open it directly, just
as you would a document. If you select a template in Word's File New dialog,
you have a choice of creating a new document or a new template based on it.
In order to edit it, you have to navigate to it through File Open. If you
select the template in Windows Explorer and double-click, the default action
is New (creating a new document based on it); in order to open it for
editing, you have to right-click and choose Open.
