I have created a 6 page document with a header set for
blank on page 1 and text on pages 2-6. The document prints
fine from Word.

When I merge the document with client data the header
prints on the first page.

Help?

If I may piggyback on your question, every time I print a
header or footer it comes out on page 1.  How do I get it
to only print on pages 2 and higher?   Thanks, TomBk

On the Layout tab of Page Setup, check the box for "Different first page."

Take a look at: How to set up letterhead or some other document where you
want one header on the first page and a different header on other pages.

step-by-step instructions.

Your thread seems to have gotten kidnapped. Let's try to get it back.

If I understand what you are doing, you created a document with
headers that you then used as the Main Document for a mail merge.

Just as a guess about what happened, I bet that you placed a "section
break" between page 1 and the other pages, rather than using the
"different first page header" feature.

When you do a mail merge, Word places a "section break" between each
copy of the form letter. That section break is probably set "same as
previous". Since for the second copy of the document the previous
section will be the second section of the first document, having it
"same as previous" will include the header from the second section.
Every copy except the first will have a header on page 1.

Try using the "different first page header" feature instead?

How's my crystal ball?
