Scenario:
I have a changed the definition of the style Heading 1
but kept the name of the style. When I paste text from
another document into my own document Word uses the
source styles of the inserted text which I don't want.
But if I do it the other way around, that is copy text
from my own document into the other, Word uses the
destination styles instead. I know I can choose another
option in the Smart Tag that shows. But I wan't to
control what Word does as default.
Also Word changes the name of a certain style in my own
document when pasting text from another document. Word
combines the two orinal style names into a new name. I
can't find the explanation for this. Can anyone help me,
please?
I use Word 2003.

I think you are seeing a variation on the Char Char problem. Those

For more information how Word handles styles and copy/paste, see here:
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/FormatOfTextChanges.html
And

I think these two pages will explain what is happening and how to prevent
it.

Hi Peer,

Very possibly it's not the style that is the problem. If the other document
used manual formatting, this will travel along into your doc.
Try to use Ctrl+Q, Ctrl+Spacebar on the text in the other doc and then
paste. Does it now take on the look of your styles?

Maybe the other doc uses alias names for some built-in styles?
Say it uses "H1" as an alias for "Heading 1", then your doc will show the
alias too after you paste in text ("Heading 1,H1").
