Unwanted changes to numbered lists

I have created a document that has a numbered outline and
alpha lettering under it.
Example:
1.
  A.
  B.
2.
  A.
     1.
     2.
  B.  (It will change to letter A. when I re-open it)

When I open the document after saving it, it changes the
alpha letters automatically and I have to keep changing it
back and it won't save it.  Any suggestions on how to get
the document to save how I want it?  Thanks for any help
you can give. I'm so frustrated with this program.

Be sure you have the numbering set up as described in
