I believe I have encountered a programming error which has
remained in all versions of Word since Word 95. This has
occurred in all versions of Windows, 95, 98, 2000 and now
XP Professional
When i highlight a word, or a sentence, and use the short-
cut keys, such as, CTL+U, not only does the sentence, or
the particular word underline - the whole document
underlines as if it was all marked.
By highlighting and clicking the Undo icon, the text
reverts to its original state and leaves the marked word,
or words underlined.
Formatting a document becomes quite frustrating, and is
somewhat intermittent.
I have downloaded and all the current patches for Win XP,
and have applied the SP-1 release to the Office XP. The SP-
2 release is too large for a slow connection.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi Cliff
The problem is almost certainly that your normal style is set to automatically update.
To solve it, in Word 2002, Format > Styles and Formatting. In the Styles and Formatting task pane, a style will be highlighted.
Right-click on that and choose Modify. Un-tick Automatically Updated. Tick Add to Template. If, when quitting Word, you're asked
whether you want to save normal.dot, say yes.
For an explanation of what's gone wrong and why this fix works, see

Hope this helps.
