MS Office Forum / Word / Long Documents / August 2003Missing Styles
I have Office XP. I've created a document based on a template. The styles from the template automatically get transferred to the document which is how I want it. When I open the document on my own computer, the styles are all there. However the document was opened on another computer and the styles are missing. Any ideas why this is happening ? Make sure you don't have "Automatically update styles" checked in the Tools | Templates and Add-ins dialog. If you do that, then the document goes looking for the template, which is not present on the other computer or, worse still, *is* present with different style definitions. -- Suzanne S. First, as you know, when you create a document from a template, the document acquires all the template's styles. Second, if you later attach another template, even if you tick the Automatically Update Document Styles, no styles will be deleted from your document. Third, Word distinguishes between what styles are in the document, and what styles Word chooses to show you. My guess is that the styles are in your document, but that your friend can't see them. Ask the friend to do the following: Format > Styles and Formatting. You'll see the Styles and Formatting task pane. Down the bottom of that Task Pane, in the Show box, choose All Styles. It doesn't actually show you all the styles, but it will show you most of them. If you really want to see all the styles, in that Show box, choose Custom and click the Styles button. Hope this helps.
