Is there a way to turn this widow/orphan control off
unless I want it?  I have to click it almost every time I
reach the bottom of a page.

Hi, Betty.  What you ask involves removing a bit of paragraph formatting
from the style (Normal, Body Text, etc.) that you are using.  To do
this, click on Format | Styles and Formatting | <select style> | Modify
| Format | Paragraph | Line and Page Breaks | uncheck the "Widow/Orphan
control" box | OK | check the "Add to template" box.

Under
Format > Paragraph > Line and page breaks
is a check-box to turn the feature on or off.

(I use Word 97.)
