So far, no problems (well, the footnotes will be only 1-column wide, I
guess that's what you meant. Maybe if you define "evenly divided" for us?).

That's some kind of a margin ("my" Bible doesn't have that, btw ;-)).
Typically, this is best done by way of frames (they can be part of a
style). In your situation, you'll probably need two such styles, one for
the left hand side and one for the right hand side (or "inside" and
"outside", but it's probably not important to work with these if you
have on both sides anyway).
