I am trying to place some text at the bottom of the page
(without using paragaph format) - is the advance field
code with the \y switch code something I would use and if
so how do I use it.  I understand how to use the down and
up switch code but I need help with this one.  Thanks.

I wouldn't try using an Advance field for this. You'd be better off using a
frame or text box with position set to Bottom Relative to Margin.
