I am using Word 2000

I am using the outline feature for numbering paragraphs -
1, 2, 3, 4, etc.  But I want a line in between the
paragraphs:  Ex:
1.   xxxxxxxxxxx

2.   xxxxxxxxxxxx
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

3.   xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

But the outline feature does not put a blank line in
between.  When I try to enter it manually, it wipes out
the outline number out.  What can I do??  I am open to any
suggestions you have.

Never use a blank line in Word (for such a thing, at least :-)).

If you want space between any given paragraph and a following heading,
setup the heading style: Format | Style ... Heading 1 ... | Format |
Paragraph | Spacing before: x pt.

There is one minor drawback with this method, a Word bug actually, which
leads to different results in honoring this spacing or not when a
paragraph happens to end up on a new page. Still easier to manage then
if you use a blank line, beleive me.

Now let's all repeat: "Never use a blank ..."
