Problem in TOC

I have a TOC in which some of the entries (headings) are
long enough to span more than one line, e.g. two lines. I
have two problems:
(1) The first lines of these entries run right upto the
right hand side, where page numbers are displayed, before
going to the next line.
(2) For these entries, the page numbers are not right
justified, unlike for other single-line entries where all
page numbers are right justified.

I tried changing the right indent of the paragraph (using
Format>Style..... etc). This has solved both the above
problems for Heading style 1 and 2 (TOC1 and TOC2), but
not for Heading style 3 (TOC3)?

Is there a more systematic way of doing this?

One way to handle this problem is to modify the appropriate TOC styles
to include (a) a right-aligned tab at the right margin and (b) an
indent from the right margin.

I just noticed that you've already tried what I suggested. Obviously,
I didn't read your message carefully the first time.  :-(

For the paragraphs that are not behaving, did you try selecting them
and pressing CTRL+Q, which resets paragraph formatting to that of the
underlying style? Try this for the TOC 3 style first, and maybe also
for the actual headings of your document.

To answer your last question: I can't imagine a more systematic way to
modify a Word document than by using styles.  :-)

Thanks Stefan for your replies,
I tried ctrl+Q, but no success. As suggested in your
first reply, I tried inserting a right-aligned tab, which
works, but partially : If I align this tab keeping in
view the 3-digit page number (say 120), the two and one
digit page numbers are short of right-justification by 2
and 1 character respectively. I am not very good at using
Tabs, I am not sure why am I required to give a number
(in cm) for the position of the Tab, even though I select
it to be Right Justified. (Word 2000)
Any ideas are welcome.
Thanks.

I'm not sure why this isn't working for you. What I get, if I specify
a right-aligned tab at the right margin and a positive indent from the
right margin is something like the following:

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx   1

[...]

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 120

where the page numbers are correctly aligned at the right margin.

Could you try to "draw a picture" (as I did above) in your response to
describe exactly how it looks?

The reason why you have to specify a position for a tab stop at the
right margin is that in Word all tab stop positions are set from the
left margin, regardless of the type of tab. (This is somewhat
annoying, but assuming that you don't frequently need to modify the
margins, it isn't that difficult to manage.)
