Hi Fishy,
Problems like that can be caused by the video driver and/or the printer
driver (Word uses the printer driver's information to do page layout in
Print Layout view). Try reinstalling the drivers, and check the
manufacturers' websites for updated drivers.
Big tables can make Word sluggish (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/FastTables.htm), but that shouldn't
affect the "jumbled" appearance.

Thanks for the suggestions. These are small tables -- 2-5 rows. I can
try reinstalling the printer drivers. But they are HP drivers, you
see, and came with a 4.5 Meg software package. I'm sure the driver
itself isn't that big; I suspect bloatware.

HP drivers are... notorious ...for problems in Word. Reportedly the beta
drivers at http://www.hp.com/pond/ljbe?ta/index.html solve some of those
problems, so see if there's one for your model.
